The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) in Tshwane held a press briefing at Tshwane House in Pretoria CBD on Friday, October 4, to address the recent ousting of Cilliers Brink as Mayor of Tshwane.
This development followed a successful motion of no confidence, which ultimately led to Brink’s removal from office. The ANCYL, represented by Convener Sizwe Tsiane and Coordinator Onkgopotse Thompson Peete, shared their views on the implications of this political shift and the potential future direction for Tshwane’s leadership.
Sizwe Tsiane highlighted the ANCYL’s position on the matter, emphasizing the need for a change in leadership to better address the needs of Tshwane’s residents. “Brink’s administration had failed to effectively manage the city’s affairs, leading to instability and dissatisfaction among the public” said Tsiane.

Tsiane expressed optimism that the removal of Brink would open the door for a leadership that is more aligned with the aspirations of the people and more committed to service delivery.
Onkgopotse Thompson Peete continued from where Tsiane left off, pointing out that the ANCYL has long been advocating for accountable governance in Tshwane. He criticized the former mayor for what he described as a lack of transparency and accountability in handling municipal issues.

“ANCYL intends to play an active role in the selection of a new mayor, electing someone who prioritizes the welfare of all Tshwane residents, particularly the youth who have been disproportionately affected by issues like unemployment and inadequate access to essential services”, said Peete.
The ANCYL also took the opportunity to call on other political stakeholders to put aside their differences and work collaboratively for the betterment of the city. The briefing concluded with a renewed call for accountability and a promise from the ANCYL to remain vigilant in holding future leaders to the highest standards.
