Tshwane University Confers Honorary Degree’s in a Prestigious Ceremony and Celebration Lunch

Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) held a prestigious ceremony on Thursday, 17 October at Theunis Bester Hall to confer honorary degrees on notable figures whose contributions have left a significant impact on their respective fields and in society.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tinyiko Maluleke, presided over the event, which honoured four distinguished individuals, the late President Samora Moises Machel, Professor Pitika Ntuli, Dr. Wouter Kellerman, and Dr. Bongiwe Dhlomo Mautloa.

“As a university, it is our privilege to recognize and honour those who have dedicated their lives to advancing humanity. Their legacies will inspire future generations of students and thinkers who will follow in their footsteps,” said Prof Maluleke.

The late President Samora Moises Machel was posthumously awarded an honorary doctorate, celebrating his remarkable leadership and lifelong dedication to the liberation of Mozambique and Southern Africa as a whole. Machel’s legacy as a revolutionary, anti-colonial leader, and advocate for human dignity was commemorated with deep reverence, acknowledging his pivotal role in shaping the political landscape of the region.

Professor Pitika Ntuli was conferred with a Doctor of Language Practice under the Faculty of Humanities, recognizing his exceptional contributions to the arts, literature, and cultural discourse in South Africa. Known for his multidisciplinary talents, Ntuli’s influence spans poetry, visual arts, and philosophical thought. His work continually challenges societal norms and promotes African consciousness, making him a worthy recipient of this academic honour.

Dr. Wouter Kellerman and Dr. Bongiwe Dhlomo Mautloa were both honoured with Doctor of Arts and Design degrees under the Faculty of Arts and Design. Dr. Kellerman, a world-renowned flutist and composer, was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the global music industry, blending South African sounds with international influences. Meanwhile, Dr. Dhlomo Mautloa, an acclaimed visual artist and cultural activist, was celebrated for her groundbreaking work in art and design, which continues to inspire and empower future generations of artists.

The ceremony concluded with a celebratory lunch, where dignitaries, faculty members, and guests gathered to honour the recipients and reflect on their contributions. The event underscored TUT’s commitment to acknowledging excellence and fostering a culture of intellectual and artistic innovation within South Africa and beyond.
